With Sam's schedule having Tuesday/Wednesday off work, we are currently enjoying our weekend. We took advantage of the beautiful weather we've been having and hiked up to Victoria Peak which is probably the biggest tourist attraction in Hong Kong. At a humid 90 degrees, we worked up a very real sweat climbing straight up the mountain but were rewarded with one of the most beautiful views of the city. If you look closely, you can see the rubber duck! Just in case that doesn't work - I took a photo through the telescope for you.
The other night Sam had me meet him after work where he had our Indian food to go and kept our destination a surprise. We walked through the typhoon shelter under the highway (totally shady) to get to the harbor where yachts are kept in Causeway Bay. We waited a few minutes for a sampan to pick us up and an old Chinese lady and her very small dog drove us around the harbor at sunset to get a new view of the always gorgeous skyline while we ate samosas. These sampans are the only way for people to get from the shore to their yachts and they are always driving around. Some people take them as far as the outlying islands, but I'm not sure I would do such a long journey in one - they're so small! By the time I thought to take a picture, it was dark, whoops!
What's new:
I have another side job and it's kind of the best ever. Our neighbors just adopted a puppy, Elvis, and need someone to check on him some days while they're at work. What do you know, I happen to be free, love puppies and live upstairs. I get paid a little cash to have an awesome time with this guy a few times each week.
What I've learned:
Always bring your keys, even if you're just going upstairs to put laundry in. I locked myself out on Saturday. Oh boy, what a feeling. I had literally nothing. Obviously no keys, no cell phone, no money. Sam was at work for the next 5 hours. Fortunately, I know his number and was able to call him while he was teaching and he loved it. I called him from a cafe down the street where they have free brownie samples. Believe me, that was a strategic move. Then I walked around the neighborhood a bit and did some yoga on the roof. I met some neighbors which was quite nice. One of them was Elvis' owner and look how awesome that was. All's well that ends well, it seems.
